History of the charity
Dr Jones was born in or near St. Davids in 1650, just 2 years after the siege of Pembroke Castle by Oliver Cromwell.
He spent his early years at Lawrenny, and after qualifying as a Doctor of Medicine, he practised in the County Borough of Carmarthen. He died quite young, aged 47 years, on the 10th January 1698, soon after making his will, in which he gave all his possessions for the benefit of the poor, and left practically all of his property in Trust for Charitable uses.
Dr. Jones did not himself name all the Charities in his will. He named four Parishes; St Davids, Lawrenny, Cosheston, and Lampeter Velfrey, and left it to his executor, namely his brother, Rev. William Jones to nominate others. The parishes nominated by his brother were St Mary, Pembroke; St. Michael, Pembroke; the village of Monkton, and St Mary-in-Liberty Tenby. Over time, all but one of the parish charities failed, leaving only the old Borough of Pembroke, which encompassed Pembroke Dock, Pembroke and Monkton.
